When footwear advice should become a referral

A good fitting specialist knows the limits of their role. Footwear and insoles can improve comfort, but they are not a diagnosis or a treatment. Recognising when to refer protects the customer and builds trust.
Signs that call for professional advice
- Numbness, tingling or burning in the feet.
- A wound, blister or sore that is not healing.
- Sudden swelling, redness or heat in one foot.
- Pain that is persistent, worsening or stops someone walking normally.
- Any foot concern in a customer who tells you they have diabetes or poor circulation.
How to refer without alarming
Stay calm and factual. You might say: "I can help with comfortable footwear, but that is worth having checked by a podiatrist or your doctor." Avoid naming conditions or guessing causes.
What you can still do
Offer to help with footwear once the customer has professional advice, and make it easy for them to come back. Referral is part of good service, not the end of the conversation.
